Sedation with laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide sedation, uses a high-concentration oxygen mixture and helps you feel relaxed during any treatment at the dentist. It is extremely effective and has virtually no side effects.
You won’t believe it, but it’s the oldest anaesthetic used in the world!
If you have ever been in our practice you will have noticed a small blue cylinder attached to a mask: that is the equipment for sedation with nitrous oxide. The gas is contained in the cylinder and is mixed with oxygen when it passes through the mask. During treatment you will breathe gas through the nose.
Sedation takes effect quickly, usually within a few minutes. You may feel lightheaded, like when you drink one too many glasses of wine, but you will remain conscious and able to answer questions or dentist commands. Many patients claim to feel relaxed and even happy under the influence of nitrous oxide.
Once the procedure is complete, you will breathe 100% pure oxygen and quickly return to normal. Nitrous oxide sedation has no side effects, which makes it a very safe option.
If you have avoided the dentist because of anxiety or fear, nitrous oxide sedation can be a very good option for you. It can help you feel relaxed and comfortable during treatment, so you can get the care you need.
